CREATING MISSIONAL COMMUNITY

Down We Go is a practitioner’s guide for creating and cultivating missional community. It’s based on the idea of living into the Beatitudes, and explores what it means to follow Jesus into the hard places of suffering, inequality, and injustice in order to cultivate, hope, beauty, justice, equality, generosity and healing.

The dream of living out the upside-down ways of Jesus is in our hearts, but many don’t know how to make “what could be” really be. We need practical, tangible ideas to make dreams reality. We need to hear how it can work, from people on the margins and practitioners living in the trenches. We need real stories of practice that will fan our hopes and dreams for justice, mercy, equality, and healing in the kingdom of God into flame. Down We Go fleshes out practicing the ways of Jesus in action, personally and through life in community.

Down We Go Living Into the Wild Ways of Jesus edition by Kathy Escobar Religion Spirituality eBooks

There was a Christian song a few years ago that said Jesus wouldn't be welcome in most of our churches because "he might get blood on the carpet." The predominate reality in our churches is we have created a cultural Jesus as we want him to be, not as he actually was, because it's a comfortable God that comforts us -- a feel-good God.
Kathy hits the nail on the head that the message of Jesus was messy for a messed-up world in which messed-up people live. Jesus said the only people who would receive his message of redeption and revolutional love were people who knew they were sick and longed for a God who didn't judge them or turn them away to only spend time with "nice" people.
For us to embrace ALL people is to follow his teachings and life, and engage in developing relationship with people, including those that make us feel uncomfortable, giving to others what we really want for ourselves: dignity, respect, acceptance as-is, and love for who we are, as we are right now, and seeing our potential for growth.
Kathy repeatedly expresses her discomfort with the very thing she feels called to do, because it often doesn't make her feel good. But we can't heal from our brokenness and extend that to others without recognizing we're neither "better than" or "worse than" anyone else. We're all in need of redemption and restoration.
I'm grateful Kathy is so honest about this truth, and personally lives what she encourages her readers to practice herself. I highly recommend this book.

Down We Go Living Into the Wild Ways of Jesus edition by Kathy Escobar Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Kathy Escobar wrote a wonderful book about her theology of downward living. On how to live out the Beautitudes. The words of this book helped me to change my thinking about how to be spiritually poor, to see the broken people in our lives. People are not projects. They are our friends. And we are not called to go to people, but to be with people who are hurting.
Kathy Escobar has challenged my Christian views of 65 years in both church and missions experience. While her "theology of brokenness" is not exactly a new concept, her application of it is both radical and transformational It goes far beyond mental acceptance of a theology but challenges one to start living it in your every day relationships. It is working at "The Refuge" in a finite and hourly setting that would not be possible for many of us. However, the core belief of "downward mobility" can be lived out in the local church and our personal lives if we would only be willing to lose ourselves to Jesus and His principles for living in the Kingdom. "Down We Go" has made me aware of a very authentic and relevant Christian world operating outside, and yet alongside, the local church.
I borrowed this book from a friend. I read it slowly and felt the Truth seeping through the pages of how Jesus calls us to Love and be in community with people from all walks of life. I finally finished reading and realized that I had to own this book, to go back and read parts of it over and over again. I felt myself being transformed. The glaze left my eyes and I realized that I want what the Refuge community has. I'm tired of the show. I want Jesus.

One of my favorite themes from the book was the idea of doing ministry WITH others. Not TO others or FOR others, but WITH. This is a huge paradigm shift for me. It makes mission work actually sound beautiful rather than forced or hierarchical.

Get your hands on this book and let the Truth of the Love of Jesus in community sink in.
I purchased the book on the day that it came out. I normally "fly" through books but this book did not allow me to do that. Matter of fact, this book may have taken the longest to read EVER for me. Now, the reason for that is not because it was bad, because I rate this book off the charts excellent. It took so long because it was challenging and it rocked me as an individual who is in a church setting that does many things to and for people but we (as a church) fail misserably on ministry "with" people.

I am now going to be purchasing numerous book editions so I can share this journey (book) with them and so we can enter into dialogue how me can make the shift to do ministry "with" people. Yesterday, I was driving with my kids and the song "I Can Only Imagine ....." came on the radio. I have been thinking and only imagining what our world would look like if Christians/Churches would follow the words of Jesus seriously and take the steps that this book offers.

Please, click buy; it will be a purchase that you will never regret, well, except for the fact that it is going to challenge you and "force" you to change your thoughts on "how" to do missions.
I'll disclose a few things up front. I have been to the Refuge once. I have known Kathy for a few years, mostly from a distance, but we have become good friends. I read the manuscript before it was published and made comments, some of which may have been helpful. And I am a huge admirer of Kathy's leadership style and passion for setting things right.

So I'm wanting you to read the book, but it's not for any of the reasons I just listed. I am wanting those who say they are followers of Jesus to consider joining in this downward journey. And I think if you read this passionate, gritty, honest journal of Kathy's experiences at The Refuge so far, that you will be compelled to rethink what you presently believe about, well...almost everything. You may even put the book down and start your own downward journey.

It won't be a waste of your time, I promise. You may not like what she has to say, but you will probably end up liking what she is doing and wonder to yourself if there isn't some way you could rid yourself of some of your own Christian baggage. You may disagree with her at times...but you will be unsettled by the consideration. There are a lot of very practical and insightful ideas presented in the context of scripture and practice that will challenge the way you think about ministry, about God, and about yourself and about your relationships with those you are closest with. Be forewarned, though. You will likely end up with a longing for something more that will not go away.

Read the book. I dare you.
